Stor-Age OBX17 Overview

The 4th edition of the Stor-Age Old Boys Tens rugby festival took place on Friday & Saturday 10 & 11 November 2017 at the Pirates Rugby Club in Greenside Johannesburg and saw celebrities, dignitaries and professionals from different backgrounds attending the event.

The event was held as a fundraiser for the Education Endowment Fund NPC, which is a non-profit organisation founded in 2016 with an aim to raise funds to distribute to disadvantaged children from disadvantaged communities. To date the fund has funded over 12 bursaries and educational programmes and with the hosting of another successful event R152k was raised to date towards the cause.

The event in itself is a by-product of the cause to raise funds as organiser Marcel Malherbe said: “We needed to make a difference to society by making a contribution and thus came up with the idea of an event that would not just serve to raise funds but also provide the alma mater from different backgrounds a platform to give back.”

This vision and desire to make a difference saw thousands of old boys and girls from different schools and different organizations which share the same vision like the Touch Rugby Sundays initiative, Gauteng Ladies Touch Rugby Association, Jozi Cats Inclusive Rugby Club, and 30 Old Boy & Old Girl Associations and teams converge at a grand scale to support the event.

The Old Boys 10s rugby was won, for the 3rd consecutive year by the Middelburg Old Boys (who defeated the unbeaten St Andrews College Old Boys in the Cup Final) and the Old Girls Netball being won by the Scorpions. The Veteran Rugby Division was won by Queen’s College Old Boys.

The stand out fixtures all came out of Pool A – which saw the 28 game unbeaten Middelburg Old Boys go down to St Stithians Old Boys. With one pool game remaining, the St Stithians old Boys required a win against newcomers and underdogs, Stirling High, to finish top of Pool A and to condemn the defending champions, Middelburg to the Plate Playoffs. Against all odds, and cheered on by Middelburg and the vast crowd, the Stirling High Old Boys managed to score in the closing seconds to defeat St Stithians, and send Middelburg through to the Cup Playoffs. This victory saw a beautiful friendship emerge out of OBX17 between Middelburg Old Boys and Stirling High – a true nation building experience
